Phoenix has a surprisingly large selection of combination coffeeshop/bars. My theory is the downtown rent encourages businesses to keep the customers coming all day (and the map of these locations seems to back me up).
Below are some of my favorites and what they do best.
First Draft Book Bar
Located in Changing Hands bookstore, First Draft is my favorite spot on this list to do work remotely. It’s certainly the quietest, with easy parking and reliable wifi. I like a glass of their kombucha on draft with a warm brown butter chocolate chip cookie, but their tea selection is wonderful as well. They also have a selection of tabletop games you can pull out and play.

Jobot
Jobot deserves a shoutout for being not just a coffeeshop/bar, but also an excellent dim sum place. If you’re looking for an espresso with your shu mai or fried rice with your chai, there’s nowhere better to go.

As a bar, it’s more for beer drinkers than those who prefer wine or cocktails, but they do have a full bar.

The Grand
This downtown spot has the absolute best variety of Italian sodas, tea, and coffee drinks. If you can think of a flavor, they probably have it in a syrup. I love their monthly rotating specials, which catalyzed my appreciation for peanut butter chai lattes. I’m also a huge fan of their cronuts.

The Grand is definitely superior as a coffeeshop. I find they lack the same creativity and great pricing as a bar.
Lux
Their central location is always busy— for a good reason! Their pastries and baked goods are next level. I’m constantly finding new favorites in their rotating selection of freshly baked treats, from the garlic cheese croissant to their massive cinnamon rolls to their vegan cookies.

It’s a little pricey for coffee drinks, but quality is high, and their prices are more reasonable for cocktails compared to nearby places.
Sip Coffee/36 Below
It might be cheating to call this a combination, since 36 Below occupies the basement while Sip takes up the ground floor, but these two businesses do technically share a building.
If you’re going to hit up just one of them, make it 36 Below. This cocktail bar is highly thematic, with exceptionally well-presented and delicious drinks. Because of their small space, I recommend making a reservation.

Luana’s Coffee & Beer
& chai & cocktails… & pizza & sandwiches… There’s so many reasons to visit! Like Jobot, my favorite aspect of Luana’s is the restaurant, not the coffeeshop or bar. They recently moved locations and reopened, so now is the time to go check them out anew, even if you’ve stopped by the old location before.

Provision
Provision has an extremely classy vibe and a menu to match. They’re outside of downtown, which is a benefit in its own way. It’s nice to have a stylish location without exorbitant prices or long waits. I highly recommend this as a date spot for classic cocktails and/or good coffee.

Honorable mentions
Kähvi Coffee + Cafe
The newest addition to this list, Kähvi is more focused on the coffeeshop aspect of their business. Their drink offerings are strongest for wine and coffee lovers. As someone who lives for tea and cocktails, they’re not my favorite, but they could be yours.
Smooth Brew
Like Kahvi and Jobot, Smooth Brew is located right on Roosevelt Row. I enjoy their offerings equally whether coffeeshop or bar, but the best reason to visit is whatever fun event they may have going on. I’ve enjoyed seeing both local djs and live music there.
Love the new post! Beyond Starbies…
