Comfort Food

This is not a database for soul food— I need to do more exploring the valley for that— but this is a list of some of my go-to spots when I’m hungry and a little beat up by my day. Longtime Grace favorites (notably UrbanCookies and Postino) have a place on my personal list, but here’s a few places for a heartwarming, belly-filling food I haven’t shared on the blog before.

Li Yuen

Whether you go for the veggie lo mein, orange chicken, or their famous wings, this place is so satisfying for American Chinese food. While they only have a walk up window, the take out requirement is part of the charm. The portions are large, which is fun for leftovers. It’s great value for your money and great fuel for a Netflix night in.

La Santisima

If Mexican food is your comfort place, the tacos, smothered burros, and quesadillas here are what you need. They’re known for the Oaxacan black mole and the Santisima, but I have a personal bias for anything Al pastor. Though I haven’t tried the entire large menu, I’d be surprised if anything isn’t a hit. They also have a ton of vegetarian options and are great for gluten free people.

Lou Malnati’s

Maybe this is cheating, since it’s not a Phoenix original, but sometimes nothing hits the spot like chicago deep dish pizza. I like to make myself feel better about myself by getting “the Lou” so I at least eat a vegetable besides tomato sauce.

Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles

This place lives up to the word of mouth hype. Their mason jar of Koolaid tastes like nostalgia, but it’s super sweet— I recommend sharing one between two people.

India Palace

This is my favorite buffet in Phoenix, full stop. Every time I come, I eat a little too much. The family that runs it is also super sweet. My advice: use the garlic naan as a utensil, go back for seconds, and try the gulab jamun for dessert. They’re also a great take out option.

Joe’s Diner

If a homey, small-town feel is what you look for in brunch or lunch, this place is absolutely charming. The very first time I ever went, I met Joe himself— that’s the level of community. They do all the diner classics except staying open late!

H-Mart’s Food Court

Whether I’m feeling Korean or Japanese food, vegetarian or meat, this food court has hefty portions and delicious flavor. They also have a SnowTime location if your comfort food taste involves something sweet.
