All About Ambiance

As I write this, I’m in the midst of the holidays. Valentine’s Day might still be two months away, but cuffing season is in full force and there’s no better time to plan ahead for a romantic time out. Here are some of my favorite spots with an intimate ambiance.

Francine

This is a classic French restaurant in Scottsdale, perfect for a special occasion meal. Their menu accommodates pescatarians and vegetarians with more variety and diversity than a standard steakhouse. Service is impeccable, and their drink selection is excellent. If I was in a higher tax bracket, I’d be here every weekend.

Belly

Belly has a more artsy edge than some of the other traditional options on this list. Their space is cozy, dark, and decorated with trendy local art. Their Channel Orange nights find inspiration from the Frank Ocean album and orange wines, paired with their Vietnamese-inspired fusion cuisine. Following them on Instagram makes staying on top of specials and special events easy, and sitting at the bar and watching their masterful bartenders work makes for a great topic of conversation.

Glai Baan

This restaurant has a warm, authentic feel inside that matches their food perfectly. Before you take someone here, make sure they actually like Thai food— they serve the real stuff. Reservations are prudent, especially on weekends, but I love squeezing into their small bar area or outdoor courtyard on a walk-in basis.

Cibo

There’s a wealth of good Italian restaurants in the valley, from the more casual Pomo to Evo in Scottsdale. However, the atmosphere at Cibo sets it apart, especially for an outdoor dining experience. It feels expensive while being reasonably priced. Be sure to make a reservation in advance!

The Farish House

Whether you sit inside or outside, this place has a classy feel that goes nicely with their more contemporary menu. It’s a great choice for doing drinks and appetizers or for plant-based eaters as well.

Novel

If you’re just looking for dessert, Novel is an ice cream place with adorable outdoor seating and an interesting selection of rotating flavors. They have dairy free sorbets, waffles, and ice cream sandwiches for those looking for something beyond a simple scoop.

The Pemberton

For a more laid back but trendy feel, the Pemberton’s outdoor shared space is a great date night spot. Order a plate from the famous Saint Pasta or their new concept Baba’s Falafel, or just grab drinks from one of the many available options. Sometimes it’s nice not to have to agree about where you’re eating.

Ocotillo

While I primarily recommend Ocotillo for their fantastic happy hour deals, they’re also a great choice aesthetically. Their outdoor space is especially lovely, with an open plan, great lighting, and plants all around. It’s romantic at night and perfect for Instagram at brunch.
