Whether you’re sober, trying to cut down, under 21, or just looking for something else fun to do, here are my favorite places to go out and not drink.
Cobra Arcade Bar
This downtown barcade is a fun place to hang out and play games, even if you (like me) don’t think you’re much of a gamer.

I don’t recommend it for just drinks or quiet, intimate conversation, but I’m a fan of heading here for a little something different. Now that people are getting back to more crowded spaces, it’s something to keep on your radar.
Platform 18
This Century Grand concept is built around next-level drinks, and their mocktails are no exception! I love the atmosphere, designed to create the experience of riding in a classic train car in the early 20th century. This is an excellent place to dress up and feel classy without necessarily involving alcohol.

The service and attention to detail are impeccable. Be sure to make reservations in advance!
Social Hall
This Tempe restaurant/bar is criminally underrated. Imagine if Dave and Buster’s had a classier, hipster sibling with great food. This is a great date or hangout spot to play some skee ball, share some churros, and keep cool indoors during the summer!
Snakes & Lattes
This board game cafe serves food and provides a fun chance to check out a massive library of board games. They have everything from card games to American tabletop classics like Monopoly or trendy European titles. Don’t worry– if you don’t know how to play something, their employees can explain the rules and help you out.
Copper Blues
The best part about Copper Blues isn’t the food or drinks, though those are both solid. The reason you need to check it out is the nearly constant live music. Their website will let you know who’s playing, but I’ve never seen a band I didn’t like. It’s a cool way to support local musicians and have a dry night out. Order the nachos and hit up live band karaoke!
Honorable mentions
FilmBar: truly more of a movie theater than a bar, but worth a mention here just because it’s so cool.
The Pemberton: a loosely organized collective of eats/drinks/shops, this space is up-and-coming.
Cactus Jack’s: another great spot to see some live music, especially if you tend towards classic rock. Order the fried mushrooms and get on the dance floor!
Hula’s Modern Tiki: for a tiki bar, this is a very solid restaurant. Check out their happy hour deals on food, especially on weekdays.
414 Pizza & Pub: if you’re a karaoke buff, you can’t miss this spot on Mill Avenue.
