I think it’s relatively easy to be plant-based in the greater Phoenix area. I’ve lived in various regions of the US since adulthood and my switch away from eating much meat, and Phoenix has been one of my favorite cities to eat in. Here are my picks for the most over- and underrated veggie-friendly spots in Phoenix proper.
The Overrated
The Vig Fillmore
I’ve heard people say this has vegetarian options, and it’s true that they exist, but I wouldn’t check this place out on that basis. If you’re going to stop by, go for happy hour, snacks, or desserts.
Vegan House
The plus side is you can be sure their food is vegan, so if you’re very strictly vegan, try it yourself instead of taking my word for it. The downside is that their menu items are hit or miss. The menu is primarily Asian-inspired, so I’d rather go to the nearby Zen Thai and just ask them to make your food vegan. Usually, it already is, as long as there’s no meat, but you can ask to make sure they leave out the fish sauce if it’s present in the dish. I’ve given Vegan House a couple chances, but with Zen Thai on the same corner, I can’t see myself returning.
The Appropriately Rated
The Coronado
It’s amazing, but if you’re vegan in Phoenix, you probably already knew that. In 2020, they switched from a vegetarian to fully vegan menu, but I think they have flavors that can appeal to anyone.
Postino’s Wine Café

The happy hour here is one of my favorites anywhere in the valley! Postino’s is never advertised as a place for vegetarians, but it’s appropriately loved by omnivores. I find it super easy to pick a delicious vegetarian bruschetta board. It’s hard to completely avoid cheese, but I love their diverse picks and willingness to make modifications. My favorites are the brie, apple, & fig and the warm artichoke spread. They also have gluten-free options.
Cornish Pasty

If you’re looking for somewhere with drinks, Postino’s is my recommendation for wine lovers but Cornish takes the crown if you prefer beer or cocktails. Their menu has a dedicated section for vegetarian and vegan options, though their standard fare is guaranteed to please meat lovers. It’s also a fun going out space whether or not you’re into drinking, with pool and darts upstairs and tabletop games in the basement.
The Underrated
Welcome Diner

This downtown-adjacent spot has a cool aesthetic and cool uses for plant substitutes like jackfruit in their classic American menu. They manage to have a family friendly vibe along with their killer rotating drink specials. I highly recommend following them on Instagram to see what’s going on with them at the moment. I took too long before finally getting around to my first visit – don’t make my mistake!
Mi Patio Mexican Restaurant
This is a sweet little hidden gem. It’s underrated for vegetarians and omnivores alike, with a tasty classic menu and cozy, colorful ambiance. Beyond the traditional rice and beans, try options with cheesy spinach, or mushroom and eggplant. It might not look as trendy as The Coronado, but they have the added bonus of excellent service and under $5 margaritas.
India Palace
While it might be a little further from downtown, this Indian place is absolutely worth the drive. The service is consistently excellent and their buffet is the absolute best. It’s not wildly photogenic, but it’s one of my favorite ways to get in some veggies. They actually make me want to eat spinach and lentils, two things I’d never voluntarily cook at home.
